How far does the impact of the films you have studied for this topic depend on distinctive uses of film techniques? [35]

La Haine

The film shows how western culture is taking over French culture through different techniques. During the scene where Hubert looks out his window into the court yard he looks over to a window where someone is setting up a set of DJ decks and speakers. The Dj then plays a mix of classic french music (Non, Je ne regrette rein) and urban D&B music (Sound of Da Police). this mix of music swell as a above taking shot represents how western culture is taking over french culture in the projects. This is also show in the scene where we are introduced to Vinz. The is a panning shot of Vinz's room and within the mise-en-scene of the room many references to pop culture and western society are shown such as wrestling posters and vinz's T-shirt of spiderman. These two shots show a representation of how these youths are breaking out of french culture and are being influenced by western cultures. One of the characters most influenced by this is Vinz the scene 'you lookin at me scene' shows how Vinz is copying his aggressive actions from the Robert De Niro film Taxi Driver, during this scene a over shoulder show with a low anglet is used to reveal Vinz acting out a aggressive scene in the bathroom mirror, also a false mirror was used during filiming so that the illusion of you looking over vizs shoulder and into the mirror is creates without seeing the camera in the mirror as well.

Words Describing La Haine

Sexist:

The women represented in this film appear to be objectified throughout. This is shown in the scene at the art exhibit where Vinz, Said and Hubert attempt to chat up to woman and when they fail become extremely aggressive because the women would give out their numbers and just wanted convosation.

Heroic:

Throughout the film the a need to be heroic is represented throughout especially through the character Vinz whom I believe represents liberte in the french motto. Throughout the film Vinz has a need to be heroic and give revenge for the wrong doings of the police he believes that shooting a police officer would make him a hero.

Pessimistic:

The character Hubert has a constant sense that the actions his friends, especially in will end up with worse and unfortunate outcomes, he is not see the heroic side of Vinz's quest for heroism but sees that only the worse can come of it. This is shown when Vinz shows hubert the stolen gun for the first time and Hubert only thinks the worst of the situation and tells vine to put it back.

Real:

Throughout the film the 'real' side of France is represented and not the side we are used t seeing. the film focuses of the projects and the population in poverty instead of high society of middle class people, the picture shows the side of countries you would only if you lived in them, usually countries are represented in a good and rich light instead of how this film represents its country, in a criminal and destructive light.

Hopeless:

The film represents a brutal cycle that the three main protagonists are stuck in, the film shows us that there is no hope for the characters to break form the cycle. This is represented in the mies-en-scene of the movie when the three main characters are standing infant of a wall that hows a graffiti picture of Charles Baudelaire ho said "the world goes round by misunderstanding"

Scenes for Poverty:

Art Exhibition:
I would write about the art exhibition as it shows a clear divided between Hubert, Said and Vinz and high society in Paris, it reflects on how they sick out and don't fit in when they're not in the projects and people resent them for it.

Hubert's Home:
This scene shows how families in the projects are also very reliant on their children to provide income not the house, Hubert giving his mother money and her not being quizzical shows that she may know what he does togged money but doesn't want to question it or stop it because she wants to support her family.

Scenes for Power:

Police Station:
At the police station the police officers show their distinguished and unnecessary sense of power towards Said and Hubert. The officers train a new officer in how to have fun and use the boys almost as toys for amusement, however there is a play of power, although the officers seem to have all the power in the situation Hubert's eye contact with the policeman in training shows he has subtle power to influence his decisions.

Vinz's Death:
During this scene a lack of power can be discussed as in the film power between the police and the men from the projects gets passed around, however in this scene nobody was in power and nobody had the power to change the situation, the officer with the gun does appear to control the situation but the direct stand of between hubert and the officer contradicts that. The death of Vinz is accidental and in the situation even the one who fired the shot had not power tons top it.

Scenes for Conflict:

Bathroom Scene:
During this scene the conflict between Vinz and Hubert is made obvious by there divide within the shot. They stand on opposite ends on the screen and even in the reflection in the mirror that divide is obvious.

Last Train Scene:
The last train scene Hubert, Vinz and said are all sitting on the train separately and in silence, this is a reflection of how there are divides growing between the group and they are beginning to drift apart, however said still remains in the middle of them both and stays in his position as the mediator.
